We had a very productive trip – and literally we felt the earth shake. As we reflect on the serious consequences of what happened in Haiti it reminds us of the obligations we have undertaken and how very important it is for us to address them. We cannot allow someone who is now living in Los Toros to bury four of her relatives in a mass grave in Haiti without some very serious reflection. What sort of compassion and solidarity can we extend to those poor people in Haiti? In what way, directly and indirectly can we help them?

Also, there are so many other issues to address we think it is time to set priorities.

In order to focus more directly on the objectives and goals of our work in Los Toros we will take a break from the Blog World and concentrate on our Web Page. It gives us an opportunity to inform more people about more things. For many people photo journalism tells a more vivid story and the dream is to eventually add sound and video to our web page.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!!

Neither Halloween nor Thanksgiving Day are celebrated in the Dominican Republic, so they celebrate Christmas. When we arrived in Santo Domingo on October 28th there was a bright Christmas tree in our hotel, when we arrived in Los Toros on October 30th there were already some Christmas Trees set up in some houses. Dominicans see Christmas primarily as a religious holiday and they start expressing thoughts about the birth of Christ early in the season and carry these thoughts well into January. The feast of Los Tres Reyes – the Three Kings, is a big finale to their celebration of Christmas. This atmosphere is a welcome relief to the tremendous emphasis on the material side of Christmas.

I recently spoke (via Skype video) with Tom, my son, who is studying in Japan and asked him if they celebrate Christmas in Japan. “Well”, he said; “Christmas is not a holiday in Japan; they have work and have school on December 25. But they do embrace the commercial aspect of Christmas”. He then showed me a photo he took in a store of a sign that read, “Merry Shopping”! Hopefully American culture does not carry the commercial aspect of Christmas that far! Perhaps this year with an economy that is still very weak there will be a renewal of the true spirit of Christmas and the great religious and spiritual significance it holds in the lives of those who follow Christ.

Meanwhile in Los Toros they are finishing work on the new Sewing Center and it should be ready for classes in January. Not only will this building help current students to complete projects and learn more quickly and easily, it will provide space for more students. It will also serve as an invitation for others to take the step to participate in the sewing classes and not only gain some skills, but also work on their personal development as a productive member of the community of Los Toros.

The Pension Project has been altered to add space for meetings and training for the Los Toros Foundation and also an office where work can be organized and records properly maintained. There will be space in the building for visitors as well as a place for the bishop and visiting priests to stay while they visit Los Toros. One room will be designated as “The Bishops Room”, however we are certain that he will allow others to use it when he is not there (that would be approximately 363 days a year). We hope to complete the newly designated – “Los Toros Foundation Center – Visitors’ House” during the next year as we continue to seek additional funding from our benefactors.

Que Pasa en Los Toros………

¡Está empezando a parecerse de Navidad!!! 

Ni Halloween ni El Día de Gracias son famosos en la República Dominicana, entonces ellos celebran mucho La  Navidad. Cuando nosotros llegamos a Santo Domingo el 28 de octubre había un árbol de Navidad luminoso en nuestro hotel, cuando nosotros llegamos a Los Toros el 30 de octubre ya había alguna árboles de Navidad  preparó en algunas casas. Los dominicanos ven Navidad principalmente como una fiesta religiosa y ellos empiezan expresando pensamientos sobre el nacimiento de Cristo temprano en la estación y llevan bien estos pensamientos en enero. La fiesta de Los Tres Reyes es un final grande celebración de Navidad. Esta atmósfera es un alivio bienvenido al tremendo énfasis en el lado material de Navidad. 

Yo hablé recientemente (vía el video de Skype) con Tom, mi hijo que está estudiando en Japón y le preguntó si ellos celebran Navidad en Japón. “Bien”, él dijo; “Navidad no es una fiesta en Japón; ellos tienen trabajo y tienen escuela el 25 de diciembre. ¡Pero ellos abrazan el aspecto comercial de Navidad”. Entonces él me mostró una fotografía  de un signo que leyó, “Feliz Compra “! Espero la cultura americana no lleva el aspecto comercial de Navidad que lejos de este! Quizás en este año con una economía que todavía es muy débil habrá una renovación del verdadero espíritu de Navidad y la gran importancia religiosa e espiritual que contiene las vidas de aquéllos que siguen a Cristo quizás. 

Mientras tanto en Los Toros ellos están terminando trabajo en el nuevo Centro de Costura y debe estar listo para las clases en enero. Este edificio no solo estaré una ayuda para estudiantes corriente para completar proyectos y aprenderlo más rápidamente y fácilmente, mantendrá espacio para más estudiantes. Y servirá como una invitación para otros tomar el paso para participar en las clases de costura y no sólo ganar algunas habilidades pero también trabajar en su desarrollo personal como un miembro productivo de la comunidad de Los Toros. 

El Proyecto Pensión se ha alterado para agregar espacio para las reuniones y entrenando para la Los Toros Fundación y también una oficina donde  puede organizarse el trabajo y puede grabarse las récordes. Habrá espacial en el edificio para los visitantes así como un lugar para el obispo y los sacerdotes visitante para quedarse mientras ellos visitan Los Toros. Un cuarto se designará como “Cuarto Los Obispos”, sin embargo nosotros estamos seguros que él permitirá otros para usarlo cuando él no está allí (ése sería aproximadamente 363 días un año). Nosotros esperamos completar los recientemente designaron – “El Centro de Los Toros Fundación – Casa de Visitantes” durante el próximo año cuando nosotros continuamos buscando contribuciones adicional de nuestros patrones.

Back from another successful Mission Trip!!! 

We have returned from Los Toros and it was a very productive mission! First of all and most important the people in Los Toros are generally healthy with no big outbreak of the flu! Of course there are many people with infirmities and they need our attention and help, but these are the chronic conditions that we so often see and at this time there does not seem to be a serious outbreak of illness within the children or young adults!

Travel conditions to the DR have changed; we have some recommendations and will publish them on our web page. We are not going to complain but I will say, “American Airlines owes me big!”

For the first time in over 100 years the roads and streets of Los Toros are paved with stone; this type of paving is with a tar base and fine stone on top that is rolled smooth. What does this mean – It rained and we were able to walk around the village without getting full of mud! This is a significant improvement in conditions!

Lights out! But at least you now don’t get full of mud when you walk in the dark! We missed some of the World Series because of rain and no electric – but the Phillies lost anyway. Meanwhile we attended a local baseball awards ceremony which of course was a big event in the village.

Though many people in the village suffer with disabilities one of them has overcome that; Reyes Beltre, blind from birth, graduated from the university with honors, was sent to Miami to receive an award and will now go for his master’s degree! Congratulations to Reyes and best wishes with his efforts to get his master’s!

Wish list – we have a list a mile long of needs and necessities in the village; why not consider a Christmas Gift to someone in the Third World? Our list and donation instructions will appear on our web page before Dec 1! We will carry your gift with us on January 5 when we return to the mission!

Que Pasó en Los Toros………

¡ Hemos vuelto de otro Viaje de la Misión con éxito!!! 

¡Nosotros hemos vuelto de Los Toros y era una misión muy productiva! ¡En primer lugar y más importante las personas en Los Toros son generalmente saludables sin la erupción grande de la gripe (flu)! ¡ Pues, hay muchas personas con enfermedades y ellos necesitan nuestra atención y ayudan, pero éstas son las condiciones crónicas que nosotros vemos tan a menudo y en este momento allí no parece ser una erupción seria de enfermedad dentro de los niños o los adultos jóvenes! 

Las condiciones de viaje al RD han cambiado; nosotros tenemos algunas recomendaciones y los publicaremos en nuestra página de rey. ¡No vamos a quejarnos pero yo diré, ” American Airlines me deben grande!” 

Para la primera vez en más de 100 años que se pavimentan los caminos y calles de Los Toros con piedra; este tipo de pavimentar está con una base de alquitrán y la piedra fina encima que se rueda liso. ¡Entonces, cuando hay lluvia nosotros pudimos caminar en el pueblo sin ponerse lleno de lodo! ¡Ésta es un gran progreso en condiciones! 

¡Luces fuera! ¡Pero por lo menos no se pone lleno de lodo cuando usted camina en la oscuridad! Mientras, extrañamos alguna de la Serie Mundial debido a lluvia y ningún eléctrico – pero, sin embargo el Files perdió. Entretanto nosotros asistimos en una ceremonia de premios por béisbol local que por supuesto era un evento grande en el pueblo. 

Aunque muchas personas en el pueblo sufren con invalideces uno de ellos ha superado eso; ¡Reyes Beltre, ciego del nacimiento, graduado de la universidad con honores, se envió al Miami para recibir un premio y irá ahora por su maestro de leyes! ¡Felicitaciones a Reyes y los deseos más buenos con sus esfuerzos para conseguir a su maestro! 

Lista del deseos – nosotros tenemos una lista tan largo de necesidades personal y necesidades en el pueblo; ¿por qué no considere un Regalo de Navidad a alguien en el Tercer Mundo? ¡Nuestra lista e instrucciones de la donación aparecerán en nuestra página de Internet antes de Dic. 1! ¡Llevaremos su regalo con nosotros el 5 de enero cuando nosotros devolvemos a la misión en Los Toros!

Philadelphia Phillies with Pedro Feliz are …….off to the World Series!!!

We will be in the Dominican Republic on October 28, 2009 and it is going to be exciting!

Congratulations to Pedro Feliz and the Philadelphia Phillies on winning the National League Championship for the second year in a row! Pedro Feliz’s contribution to winning the pennant was a Home Run in the final game and this sets the stage for an exciting World Series! We will be in Los Toros during the Series and some of our evening meetings may be interrupted since most of the people will be watching the game at an open air Sports Bar where they have Dish Service. The electric should be on in the DR during the Series but just in case the local bars are sure to have generators on standby. It will be great fun to watch the game with the villagers at the bar which is just half a block from Pedro’s house. Baseball is far and above the National Pastime of the Dominican Republic, and along with the rest of the country Los Toros will be taking the series very seriously!

Of course Los Toros has a baseball team and has some great players. Their baseball field is BYOC – bring your own chair – but it is huge and often has games going on in more than one field. In the early mornings, before it gets too hot, you can see the players out running and conditioning themselves; latter in the morning they have practice on the field. Many of them saw Pedro doing this and now whenever he is in town he mentors them and works out with him. Besides Pedro the village has two other men playing baseball in the USA, right now both are in the minor leagues, but have potential!

So …………  Go Phillies!!!!!! It will be great fun to be in Los Toros during the World Series!!!!!

 Que Pasa (Próxima Semana) en Los Toros ……..

¡Filadelfia Filis con Pedro Feliz esta en la Serie Mundial!

¡Nosotros estaremos en la República Dominicana el 28 de octubre de 2009 y va a ser muy interesante!

¡Felicidades a Pedro Feliz y todos los Filis en ganar el Campeonato de la Liga Nacional por dos años adelante!  ¡La contribución de Pedro Feliz a ganar el banderín de la Liga Nacional era un “jonrón” en el juego final y esto pone la fase para una Series Mundial muy interesante! Nosotros estaremos en Los Toros durante la Serie y algunas de nuestras reuniones de la noche pueden a demorar  porque la mayoría de las personas estarán mirando el juego en un bar donde ellos tienen servicio de la televisión. El luz debe ser abierto en el RD durante la Serie pero simplemente en caso no hay luz las barras locales están seguras tener plantas. Será muy bueno para mirar el juego con los camposinos en la barra que es muy cerca de la casa de Pedro. ¡El béisbol está  sobre todo el Pasatiempo Nacional de la República Dominicana, y junto con el todo país Los Toros estará tomando este Serie Mundial muy serio!  

Por supuesto Los Toros tiene un equipo del béisbol y tiene algunos muy buenos jugadores. Su campo del béisbol es BYOC – traiga su propia silla – pero es grande y a menudo tiene juegos que entran adelante más de un campo. En las mañanas tempranas, antes de que se ponga demasiado calor, puede ver los jugadores corriendo y condicionarse; más tarde por la mañana ellos tienen práctica en el campo. Muchos de ellos vieron Pedro que hace esto y ahora siempre cuando él está en el pueblo el habla y hace practica y entrenamiento con los jugadores local. ¡Además Pedro el pueblo tiene dos otros hombres que tocan béisbol en el EE.UU., ahora mismo los dos vuelven en las ligas menores, pero tiene potencial! 

¡Entonces………… Va Filis!!!!!! Será muy interesante para estar en Los Toros durante la Serie Mundial!!!!! 

October Mission!!! 

We are returning to Los Toros on October 28, 2009! There is a very busy agenda as we work on current programs and prepare for projects and activities for the year 2010. Here are some of the projects that we will work on:

Water Filter Cooperative – we will discuss progress with the new “Clay Filters” and make arrangements to procure more for families in the village.

Sewing Center – we will inspect progress of the construction of the new building and make arrangements for the installation of the special solar tubes – lights.

Pensión - we will inspect progress on the Pension – Guest House and make plans for its completion for next year.

Health Committee – we will start planning for a special pre-natal program to train local villagers on how to help pregnant women both in caring for themselves and also how to get good health care. The program will start in January 2010.

Music Project – we will research the possibility of doing a music camp next year to introduce children to musical instruments.

Volleyball Camp – we will work with young people and school leaders to organize a training camp for next year.

English Project – we will continue our efforts at teaching English and plan a special course for January and next May to help people in the village to learn English. This is in preparation for our special English Speaking Mission Experience for October of next year.

There is much more to be done as we continue our efforts to collaborate with groups in the village as well as with others outside of the village in an effort to help the village of Los Toros continue to grow not only in the area of living conditions but also in personal development. All of our mission trips are intensive but also exciting as we work with enthusiastic and dedicated leaders who are committed to service in their community.  Que Pasa (Este Mes) en Los Toros ……..

Comité de Salud - vamos a planear para un programa pre-natal especial para entrenar los campesinos cómo ayudar mujeres embarazadas ambos queriéndose y también cómo conseguir cuidado de salud. El programa empezará en enero 2010. 

Proyecto de Música - vamos a investigar la posibilidad de hacer un entrenamiento de música para presentar niños a los instrumentos musicales. 

Entrenamiento Voleibol - vamos a trabajar juntos con jóvenes y líderes de la escuela a organizar un proyecto de entrenamiento por el próximo año. 

Proyecto de inglés - continuaremos  nuestros esfuerzos  instrucción de inglés y planearemos un curso especial durante enero y el próximo mayo ayudar a las personas en el pueblo aprender inglés. Esto está en preparación para nuestro programa de una Experiencia de la Misión en idioma inglés durante octubre del próximo año. 

Hay mucho  más como nosotros continuamos esfuerzos para colaborar con grupos en el pueblo así como con otros fuera de del pueblo en un esfuerzo para ayudar al pueblo de Los Toros a continuar no sólo creciendo de condiciones de vida pero también en desarrollo personal. Todos nuestros viajes de la misión son intensivos pero también dinámicos cuando nosotros trabajamos con líderes entusiásticos y dedicados a servir su comunidad.
